Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Our Work - Part II

Some Possible Inspirations

by Andrew Holmes, 1st March 2024
As the reality of the climate crisis sinks in, professionals in every sphere are looking at how to reduce the environmental impact of their fields of work.  We asked fellow conscious movement teachers to share their own creative solutions.

This is the second of a two-part series. You can find the first, which focused on ways to reduce the CO2 emissions generated by travel, on our website.

Here are some suggestions for other ways we can make a difference :
  • Choose venues that use electricity from renewable sources, and power their heating or cooling sustainably. (After travel, the use of heat and power is our second biggest contributor to greenhouse gases.)
  • Store equipment where we teach, so we don’t have to transport it.
  • Share equipment with other teachers, so it doesn’t have to be manufactured twice.
  • Provide drinking water, and encourage the use of reusable water bottles.
  • Provide the opportunity to recycle and compost waste.
  • If you still use paper flyers, print and distribute accurate quantities so they don’t get thrown away, and use recycled paper.
  • Provide plant-based food.
  • Model and encourage conscious consumerism around the clothes that are worn on the dancefloor.
  • Use a web host powered by renewable energy for your website (for example, GreenGeeks).
  • Use computer systems, platforms and devices provided by ethical companies.
  • Use a bank that doesn’t invest in fossil fuels.
  • Provide your students with a rotating list of projects they can support to offset the carbon emissions associated with attending your workshops. (Include a hassle-free option to pay a little more and take care of it for them.)
  • Use a carbon footprint calculator (like this one) to work out your emissions from teaching.
  • Give money to a project that will help to offset your impact (like these), or plant trees (for example, here) to offset your carbon consumption. (5 new trees per tonne of CO2 generated seems to be about right.)

We hope these ideas will spark your creativity! The problem can seem daunting.
Maybe you can choose one area to make a change..? We can all make a difference.

Do let us know if there’s something you do which we haven’t mentioned.
And thank you for everything you’re already doing in this area!

With hope for the planet,
Andrew Holmes for the ICMTA Climate Team
